Bayelsa LGA rallies security chiefs to tackle herdsmen threat
By Tapre Timine, Bayelsa
In a move to safeguard the people of Ekeremor Local Government Area, the Chairman, Hon. Onniye Isaac, convened a critical security summit on Thursday, drawing together the top brass of the area’s security architecture.
The emergency session focused squarely on the rising threat posed by Fulani herdsmen, whose “unauthorised” occupation of farmlands and forest areas has unsettled communities and disrupted daily life across the LGA.
Clearly unsettled by mounting reports of these invasions, Onniye denounced the situation as “an intolerable violation of our people’s peace and means of survival.”
Calling for immediate, coordinated measures, he underscored the need for swift intervention to restore calm, particularly for women farmers now reluctant to venture out to their lands due to safety fears.
Addressing the assembled security leaders, the Chairman urged them to heighten surveillance, foster stronger inter-agency cooperation, and stay ahead of potential threats.
He also revealed the Bayelsa State Government’s latest directive to set up a dedicated security task force, specially mandated to prevent further herdsmen encroachments and deliver prompt, effective action wherever security is compromised.
He said:
“We cannot watch from the sidelines while fear grips our communities.
“I call on all security operatives to step up their vigilance and work hand-in-hand with my administration to stamp out this menace.”
Among those present at the high-level meeting were ACP Daniel Ezeala, NPF Area Commander; CSP Chukuemeka Bonaventure, DPO Ekeremor; SUPT Idigo Anthony Lyk NSEDE D.O Ekeremor; SP Ebigha Desmond, DPO Aleibiri; and Joshua Collins of the DSS.
The meeting concluded with a unified pledge from security heads to scale up patrol operations, strengthen intelligence networks, and enforce rapid response mechanisms aimed at safeguarding every corner of Ekeremor.
Also in attendance were Hon. Edwin Itoko (Supervisor for Works), Hon. Paleowei Fagi (Supervisor for Education), Hon. Napoleon Ebikeme (Supervisor for Special Duties), Hon. Dukumor Ogbomudia (Supervisor for Agriculture), Chief Angeme, and Isaiah Esa, Youth President of Ekeremor.
