Bangladesh flooding leaves 2 dead, nearly 3m people displaced

On Thursday, the government reported that extensive flooding in eastern Bangladesh has resulted in two deaths and left nearly three million people stranded. Heavy rains and water surges from upstream hilly areas have caused local rivers to overflow, leading to widespread flooding.

In the past three days, rescuers have evacuated around 75,000 people to safety out of an estimated 2.9 million affected by the floods, according to senior government official Ali Reza. While Reza confirmed two flood-related deaths, local media reports suggest the number may have reached four.

The floodwaters have inundated homes, croplands, and roads across large areas in eastern Bangladesh. Authorities have suspended railway services between Dhaka and the port city of Chattogram due to submerged railway tracks, as reported by railway official Mohammad Moniruzzaman.

Footage shows army troops and volunteers from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society rescuing flood victims from chest-deep water in a remote village using speedboats. The local weather office reported that major rivers in the northeastern and eastern regions of Bangladesh continue to rise. Although heavy rainfall persists in some areas, it is expected to decrease by Friday morning.
