Bandits & the scourge of rape: Necessity of broad architecture of security responses in localities
The escapades of bandits in Nigeria have come with several stings of discomfiting ills. The mischievous elements who form the bandit groups are known to be perpetrators of chunks of despicable acts repugnant to the course of natural justice and humanity. The scourge of kidnapping, gruesome killings, rustling, razing communities, and displacement of settlements, among others, have been acts of ills which the escapades of the mischievous groups have recorded.
More disturbing has been the case of rape which bandits have been known for. The menace of rape by bandits is traceable to the modus operandi of mischievous elements among nomadic herders who are for long known for records of various forms of attacks on farmers, one of which include rape of helpless women who they take advantage of. The deepening of the ill has recently received worsening records following the heightening of escapades of bandits who now organise themselves into formations of threats against the society.
On Thursday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) disclosed that unknown gunmen believed to be bandits who attacked Nuku village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara, whisked away two minor-girls which they had carnal knowledge of. A statement signed by the Spokesman of Kwara Command of the Corps, Mr Babawale Afolabi, on Thursday read: “In the early hours of November 3, some yet to be identified gunmen invaded Alhaji Hassan Yunusa’s settlement, at Nuku village in Kaiama. Investigation revealed that the assailants were actually looking for money, as they ransacked the whole place and could not find anything. They attacked Alhaji Yunusa and Woru Yunusa with multiple machete wounds and went away with two girls, but later released them few hours later. It was discovered that the abductors had canal knowledge of the innocent girls.” The spokesman said that the two victims were receiving medical treatment at a medical facility and series of medical tests were carried out on them.
The mayhem perpetrated by bandits in the Country have come with deep seated socio-economic and political strains. The impacts of the menace have constituted grounds which continue to brew psychological disorders capable of foisting disorderlinness in the society. The spread of psychological disorder capable of brewing from emotional imbalance and disruptions from such incidences of rape, are strings of discomfort capable of leaving the society at the corridor of disarray. It has become necessary for the Government to put into bear the necessity of scaling up security responses at the localities.
The expanding networks of banditry in the Country which has been attracting sprawling records of incidences of gruesome and nauseating mischiefs call for stronger responses than what the Government is currently giving. It has become non negotiable to broaden the architecture of security formations for stronger response at localities across the Country. The sting of such inhumane acts of bandits as rape are anti-moral and grossly repugnant to the principles of natural justice and human dignity. The resultant effects of a population grossly exposed to such ills are the reflections of a depressed population whose productivity are deficient to the yearnings of growth and development. Hence, the ravaging scourge has been the ground for deep seated albatross which has left the society at the corridor of distress and discomfort. Mustering gravitation of forceful efforts to coordinate measures towards the end of firm administration of deployment of secucity forces has become non negotiable.
