Bandits kidnap university lecturer in Zamfara

The Director of the Centre for Research in the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Bello Janbako, has been abducted by bandits.

Janbako, who is also a senior lecturer in the university’s Department of Islamic Studies, was kidnapped at his residence in Damba, Gusau, the state capital, on Wednesday.

A source explained that the bandits broke into Janbako’s residence around 2:00 am on Wednesday and took him away.

According to the source, security operatives engaged the bandits in a gun duel in a bid to foil the abduction.

He stated that when the bandits arrived at Janbako’s residence, they fired several gunshots in order to frighten the residents of the area and later broke into the house and abducted him.

The bandits were confronted by the security personnel who arrived the area on a rescue mission.

“Unfortunately, the bandits overpowered the security personnel due to their numbers and ran back to the forest with Bello Janbako,” the source said.

He described the incident as unfortunate, noting that the area is no more safe as bandits have been attacking and abducting people, despite its closeness to the Government House, Gusau.

ASP Yazid Abubakar, the spokesperson of the state police command, could not be reached for comments.
