At least 157 killed in landslides in Ethiopia

At least 157 individuals have tragically lost their lives in landslides that struck south-western Ethiopia. According to a spokesperson from the civil protection authority, dozens of people remain unaccounted for as of Tuesday. The spokesperson expressed grave concern, noting, “We are still in the process of recovering bodies, and unfortunately, the casualty count is expected to rise significantly.”

The calamity unfolded amidst a heroic effort on Monday when hundreds gathered to rescue those affected by the disaster, only to face yet another landslide reportedly triggered by the ongoing heavy rainfall. Initially impeding further rescue operations, the relentless downpour exacerbated the already perilous conditions.

Landslides are unfortunately not uncommon in this hilly region, particularly with the onset of the rainy season. The area experienced its initial wave of mudslides on Sunday, underscoring the precariousness of the situation and the urgent need for continued vigilance and support in the affected communities.
