ASUU, FG in meeting over strike notice

A meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced in Abuja.

This meeting follows a recent threat from ASUU to strike due to the alleged failure of the Federal Government to address their demands. The threat comes after a national executive council meeting of the union held at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024, where university lecturers resolved to consider a nationwide strike over the government’s non-fulfillment of the 2009 renegotiated agreement.

ASUU’s demands include enhancements in staff welfare, increased university funding, and a halt to the proliferation of universities across Nigeria.

In response to ASUU’s ultimatum, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman acknowledged that many of the issues raised by the union have been longstanding, dating back to 1981. However, he assured that letters of invitation have been extended to the union’s leadership and other relevant organizations, and efforts are being made to address their concerns.

Mamman stated, “We are actively addressing most of ASUU’s concerns. For example, the issue regarding the exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) has been resolved by the President, though implementation has been delayed due to bureaucratic processes. We expect that some of these issues will be discussed and resolved in our meeting on Monday.”

He further highlighted that many of ASUU’s demands have been ongoing since 1981, with various administrations facing similar strikes. However, he emphasized that the current administration is committed to providing a lasting solution, as promised during the President’s campaign.

The minister urged ASUU to approach the negotiations with an open mind and a spirit of cooperation to ensure that the interests of all parties are adequately represented.
