As NYSC goes digital using modern techniques in store management

The National Youth Service Corps since inception during the Military Head of states, General Yakubu Gowon five decades ago has been struggling to put its feet in the digital world in terms of documentations and certifications of Corp members under its scheme.

The latest development of embracing modern techniques in store management will assist in daily activities to strengthen the system and it is targeted at flushing out nefarious operations by some evil minded personnel in connivance with their syndicates.

This commitment to modern techniques in good stock keeping practices is enshrined in the Federal Government adopted computerisation process for its store officers across all NYSC formations nationwide.

Data made available from NYSC indicates that the Scheme would continue to provide updated information on the administration and inventory control management of government stores such as Government Information and Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), among others.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed in Abuja while declaring open the Store Officers’ Workshop with the theme; “Ensuring Accountability and Good Record Keeping in Contemporary Store Administration of the NYSC,” stated that the significance of the workshop cannot be overemphasised as it would enhance timely procurement, distribution and tracking of items.

As Custodians of vital resources, store officers are expected to be diligent, trustworthy and dedicated while also upholding the integrity of NYSC supply chain management.

According to him, “The programme will provide opportunities for skill enhancement, networking and peer review towards efficient service delivery. I encourage you to participate actively and leverage on this opportunity to deepen the understanding of your responsibilities.”

The NYSC Management remains committed to enhancing staff welfare while also building capacity through more training that would sustain the NYSC excellent rating in service delivered workshops would enable the Store Officers to have a better understanding and appreciation of GIFMIS and its functionalities.

They would also be educated on the online computerisation process on store and asset management and above all, encourage Store Officers to wake up to their responsibilities as State Managers in their respective locations.

The DG has tasked the Corps Members to utilise the opportunities of the service year to acquire skills through the NYSC Entrepreneurship Development programme and become employers of labour instead of searching for the unavailable salaried jobs. Most of their predecessors that acquired skills during their service year are now self-employed with thriving businesses in different vocations across the country.

He urged the Corps Members to participate actively in all camp activities and cultivate team spirit among themselves.

“We have organised important lectures for you in camp and all of them are very important. Don’t miss any of the lectures, especially SAED. This was designed to deliberately make you acquire skills of your choice and become employers of labour thereafter,” the DG said.

General Ahmed also warned the Corps Members against indulging in vices like cultism, drug abuse and hooliganism. He added that anyone caught engaging in any of such acts would be prosecuted accordingly.

He urged them to fully dedicate themselves to national service by contributing their quota to the development of their state of deployment.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday recently tasked Nigerian youths to embrace digital skills in order to grow their businesses, career and entrepreneurial capacity to achieve national development. These are measures put in place to provide empowerment opportunities for youths in the country.

The stewardship of the current NYSC DG is putting everything possible for a transformation scheme thereby embracing the digital age in their operational scale. Other government agencies and parastatals should key into this innovation for the country to do away with issues relating social injustice, victimisation among other vices in the society.

Beyond the managerial aspects in operations, the deployment of techniques will assist in checkmating the issues of fakery in the system as certifications from various higher institutions of learning. The modern tools can be able to detect original and fake certificates for the service. Therefore, this is a welcome development to the country and it will improve the quality of education at large.
