Argentina coach Scaloni puts future at national team into question

Argentina World Cup winning coach,  Lionel Scaloni has surprisingly put into question, his future at the national team.

“I have to think a lot about what I’m going to do because the bar is very high and it’s hard to keep going,” Scaloni said after Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 on Tuesday in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

His contract with the team runs until after the 2026 World Cup.

“The national team needs a coach who has energy and feels comfortable,” Scaloni said following the game, which was overshadowed by violence in the stands.

Scaloni took the job after the 2018 World Cup, in which Argentina was  eliminated in the last 16. In 2022 in Qatar, together with top start Lionel Messi, he led the national team to their first World Cup title since 1986.

Argentina top the standings of the 2026 South American World Cup qualifiers. Tuesday’s game was Brazil’s first-ever home defeat in a World Cup qualifier but the match was overshadowed by crowd trouble at the Maracana stadium.

Kick-off was delayed by half an hour after Argentina fans and police clashed.
