Annang Kingdom faces controversy over chief-to-be’s sexual orientation
The people of Annang Kingdom have voiced deep concern following revelations surrounding their chief-designate, Ebe Nsisong Etim, who was reported to be bisexual.
Nsisong, who was set to assume the title of Nkuku 2 and lead alongside other chiefs, was allegedly discovered engaging in same-sex relations on November 12, 2024—just a month before his scheduled coronation.
The traditional council had initially chosen Nsisong to continue his late father’s legacy and uphold the customs of the kingdom. However, events took an unexpected turn when he and a colleague were reportedly found together at a hotel in Alimosho, Lagos.
Shortly after his pre-coronation rites were performed, suspicions arose that he had violated certain sacred laws. A source close to the matter stated that same-sex relationships, in addition to being illegal under Nigerian law, contradict the kingdom’s long-standing traditions. “One of the most serious taboos in our culture is for a man to engage in intimate relations with another man,” the source claimed.
As speculation grew regarding Nsisong’s personal life, a group was reportedly tasked with investigating him. According to accounts, he was closely monitored in Lagos, and on the day in question, he and a colleague were trailed to a hotel, where they were confronted. Following this, Nsisong was severely beated by a mob and left unconscious on the street, while his colleague was taken away by the attackers.
Unbeknownst to the mob, Nsisong was later transported to a hospital for medical care. Recently, reports emerged that he had relocated to Ogun State. In response, local authorities and community members initiated efforts to locate him, though he remains at large.
The Annang community is facing uncertainty due to the vacant Nkuku chief seat. Tradition dictates that a new chief cannot be appointed until Nsisong is formally relieved of his title and the staff of office is retrieved. As a result, community leaders are urging anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward so the matter can be addressed in accordance with their customs.
