ANCOPSS urges president Tinubu to reconsider scraping NSSEC

The All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the decision to scrap the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC).

This plea was made by the national president of the Commission, Muhammad Musa, during a press briefing held in Abuja.

The NSSEC is currently under review, as recommended by the Oronsaye Report, which suggests transferring its functions to the Department of Basic and Secondary Education within the Federal Ministry of Education.

Mr. Musa emphasised that abolishing the commission could have adverse effects on the quality of secondary school education in the country. He expressed concerns that implementing this proposal could further destabilise an already fragile secondary education system.

“Scrapping the commission will destroy the secondary education sector and destroy the good structure already put in place. If the Oronsaye report’s axe is allowed to fall on the commission, it will bring an end to the current sustained collaborative efforts between NSSEC and the states to reposition secondary schools,” he said.

The president further expressed fear that the commission, if scrapped, would leave secondary and technical schools to take effective charge of the sector.

Therefore, he called on Tinubu to reconsider the recommendation, allow the commission to exist, and continue providing the needed interventions to strengthen secondary school education in the country.

Recall that President Tinubu, on March 7, inaugurated a committee for implementing the Oronsaye Report, which recommends the merger of some ministries, departments, and agencies to cut the cost of governance
