Anambra: TC Chairmen of flood prone areas decline interviews on mitigation plans
BY RAYMOND OZOJI, Awka
Transition Committee Chairmen of Anambra-East, Anambra-west, Ekwusigo and Idemili-South Local Government Areas have blatantly declined response to calls for interviews regarding mitigation plans for victims should the 2023 flood devastations begin.
Recall that the Federal Government through relevant agencies had issued notices that Anambra and 10 other States across the Federation would be affected by the impending flood, hence the need for adequate mitigations. In Anambra alone, about 10 council areas have been listed as areas that would be grossly affected by the rise in water levels.
These council areas include Ihiala, Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra-East, Anambra-West, Onitsha-North, Onitsha-South, Idemili-South, Awka-North and Ekwusigo.
Although reports have it that the Anambra State Government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had conducted sensitisations on the incoming deluge and why inhabitants of flood prone areas should relocate to the uplands to avoid intense catastrophe, some Local Government Chairmen of the affected areas have refused to respond to phone calls on preparedness plans.
When this reporter called the Transition Committee Chairmen of Anambra-East, Anambra-west, Ekwusigo and Idemili-South to speak on plans to contain the flood and response mechanism to victims, none took calls from him to respond to the issue..
