Anambra Governor tasked on erosion threats

The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged the Governor, Willie Obiano, to direct relevant ministries and agencies to control erosion threats in the state.

The House resolution followed a motion moved under Matters of Urgent Public Importance by Mr. Emmanuel Nwafor, representing Orumba South Constituency, at plenary on Wednesday.

According to Nwafor, there is a need to urgently address the problem as it is ravaging some communities and roads along Ekwulobia-Umunze road within Isulo axis.

“Erosion menace has been a recurring environmental problem in Anambra, which has placed the state as the most affected in the South-East.

“That Ekwulobia-Umunze road is the only access road to the three tertiary institutions in the areas, namely Federal Polytechnic Oko, National Open University Isulo and Federal College of Education Technical Umunze.

“It is also an access road to Imo and Abia states. Urgent intervention in addressing the erosion menace will safeguard the lives and property of the people,” he said.

In his views, Dr. Pete Ibida representing Njikoka ll Constituency, said that the road was strategic as it connected two local government areas and could affect the socio-economic activities of the area if not given attention.

“That road connects Aguata and Orumba South Local Government Areas, and this erosion menace, if not controlled soon, can affect the social and economic activities of that area,” he said.

Contributing, Mr. Edward Ibuzo representing Onitsha North ll Constituency, said that the massive gullies in some areas of the state contributed to the high rate of road accidents in the state.

Ibuzo urged the House to utilise its power of oversight functions to call the relevant ministries and agencies to order.

Also speaking, Mr. Ejike Okechukwu representing Anaocha ll Constituency, urged the incoming administration of Prof. Charles Soludo to prioritise erosion control in the state.

The Speaker of the House, Mr. Uche Okafor, urged the relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of erosion control to do the needful.

The House adjourned until March 15 for plenary.
