The Anambra Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo has urged more women to get involved and explore opportunities in innovation and technology to drive gender equality in the country.
Obinabo made the call on Tuesday in Awka, to commemorate the 2023 International Women’s Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Women’s Day is marked annually worldwide on March 8, to celebrate women’s achievements – from the political to the social — while calling for gender equality.
This year’s event has the theme : ‘Embrace Equity and DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’.
According to her, women and girls need to maximise every opportunity especially in innovation and technology because the digital age has created new and unprecedented opportunities.
“It is time we start talking about why equal opportunities are not enough in areas of technology and innovation; and encourage women and girls to embrace equality by taking up courses in science and technology as such is not only meant for men.
“Bringing women and girls into technology results in more creative solutions and has greater potential for innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality
“Gender parity cannot be achieved overnight, it requires diligent committment from us, women, so that gradually, we have innovators and entrepreneurs.
“This is why we need to increase our involvement in technological innovations and earn our own deserved quota in the society,” she said.
