The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned moves to ease sanctions on Russian oil, warning that any relaxation would effectively fund Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s reaction follows reports of potential U.S. measures aimed at stabilising global energy prices amid continued geopolitical tensions linked to the war with Russia.

Speaking on the development, the Ukrainian leader stressed that weakening restrictions on Russia’s oil sector could directly strengthen its military capacity, undermining efforts to bring the conflict to an end.

“Every concession only prolongs the war,” Zelenskyy said, urging allies to maintain firm economic pressure rather than prioritising short-term energy concerns.

Since the outbreak of the war in 2022, Western nations, including the United States and European allies, have imposed multiple rounds of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports, a key source of revenue for the Kremlin.

However, fluctuating global oil prices and supply concerns have continued to test the resolve of some countries, with policymakers weighing the impact of sanctions on domestic economies against the need to sustain pressure on Moscow.

Analysts note that Russia’s oil and gas revenues remain central to financing its military operations, making the energy sector a critical leverage point in the conflict. Any easing of restrictions, they argue, could dilute the effectiveness of existing sanctions and prolong hostilities.

Zelenskyy reiterated that maintaining a united front is essential, calling on international partners to prioritise long-term peace and security over immediate economic relief.

The debate highlights the broader challenge facing global leaders, balancing energy stability with sustained geopolitical pressure, as the conflict shows no immediate signs of resolution.
