Yuletide: NIMASA DG pledges to deliver stronger performance in 2026

25 Dec 2025

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has assured stakeholders in the Nigerian maritime industry that the agency would intensify its efforts to ensure that 2026 delivers even greater benefits to all stakeholders.

In a goodwill message to mark the year end festivities, the NIMASA DG described 2025 as a successful year for the sector.

Highlighting key achievements recorded in 2025, the NIMASA boss pointed to the sustained zero tolerance for piracy in Nigerian waters, the deposition of three Instruments of Accession to International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continued industrial harmony in the sector, and Nigeria’s election into Category C of the IMO Council.

According to him, the absence of piracy attacks throughout the year underscored the effectiveness of maritime security measures, while Nigeria’s successful election into the IMO Council reflected growing international confidence in the country’s maritime governance.

“The year 2025 has been a good one for our industry as once again, we have not recorded a single piracy attack in our waters in a whole calendar year.

Nigeria was also able to deposit three Instruments of Accession to IMO Conventions signed by President Bola Tinubu, GCFR.

We have maintained industrial harmony in the sector, all of which culminated in Nigeria’s election into Category C of the International Maritime Organization,” Mobereola said.

He acknowledged the contributions of maritime stakeholders to these achievements, thanking them for their support and cooperation throughout the year, and extended season’s greetings to industry players.

Looking ahead, the NIMASA Director General called on operators to approach the new year with optimism, noting that Nigeria’s membership of the IMO Council comes with greater responsibilities.

“At NIMASA, we appreciate the weight of our renewed responsibility by virtue of Nigeria’s membership of the IMO Council. To whom much is given, much is expected. You can therefore be sure of an increased momentum in our resolve to sustain maritime safety, security, environmental protection and adherence to relevant conventions and protocols with renewed vigour,” he stated.

Mobereola concluded by expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, industry stakeholders, NIMASA management and staff, as well as Nigerians at large, while wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
