The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations that authorities are denying political parties access to Abuja’s Eagle Square, insisting no formal request was submitted.
Speaking to journalists on Monday during an inspection of ongoing projects across the capital, Wike described the claims as misleading and lacking procedural backing.
The clarification follows accusations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which alleged that its preparations for a national convention were being hindered by the refusal of authorities to approve the use of Eagle Square and the Velodrome.
However, Wike maintained that access to the venue remains open to all organisations that comply with established guidelines, stressing that due process must be followed.
“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development,” he said.
“No formal application has been submitted to my office or any relevant authority.”
He cited previous conventions by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as examples of groups that successfully used the venue after meeting requirements, including payment of necessary fees.
Wike added that such events contribute to government revenue and reiterated that any group claiming denial must present evidence of a submitted and acknowledged application.
Addressing a separate issue, the minister debunked reports that the Kugbo Bus Terminal had collapsed, clarifying that the incident involved roofing damage caused by strong winds.
According to him, the main structure remains intact, with repair works already underway and no casualties recorded.
Providing updates on infrastructure, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of development across Abuja, noting that key road projects are expected to be completed by May 15, while streetlight installations are slated for completion by the end of May.
He also highlighted progress at the Wassa artisan relocation site, a long-awaited project aimed at resettling mechanics and informal sector workers, stating that the initiative is finally being realised through coordinated efforts between government agencies and contractors.
