…Pledges to create a well-equipped, tech-driven police force

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast commitment to improving policing across Nigeria, pledging to spare no effort in strengthening the country’s security.

Speaking at the inaugural National Police Day celebrations on Monday, in Abuja, President Tinubu underscored the vital role of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining peace and security throughout the nation.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President reiterated the importance of a well-equipped, well-trained, and highly motivated police force to address crime and internal security issues such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping.

“We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring effective policing across Nigeria. The safety of lives and property remains a top priority for this administration, and we are committed to providing the police force with the necessary resources to maintain law and order,” he said.

In a statement signed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of The Vice President), Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to build a Nigeria Police Force that is well-trained, well-resourced, and equipped with modern tools and technology to effectively combat crime.

This, he noted, was essential to ensure that the country’s security forces remain “steps ahead of those who threaten the peace, welfare, and prosperity” of Nigeria.

“We are committed to improving police welfare and implementing comprehensive reform. As part of this effort, let me assure you that the Federal Government will institutionalise 7th April as an annual National Police Day, cementing its place in our national calendar and demonstrating our unwavering appreciation for the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

The President outlined concrete measures his administration is currently enacting to create a more effective and formidable police force. These measures include the provision of modern tools and technology, as well as improved housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for the families of police personnel.

“We are taking decisive steps to enhance the conditions under which our police officers serve. Adequate housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for your children are priorities that we are committed to fulfilling,” he stated.

He also promised that these improvements would begin immediately, assuring the police that their salaries and benefits would reflect the gravity of their responsibilities and the risks they face daily.

“Anything less would be unacceptable,” he added.

President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that his administration is fully committed to ensuring effective policing, safeguarding lives and property, and addressing internal security challenges such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping. He affirmed that the administration remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and security throughout the country.

The President described the Nigeria Police Force as the cornerstone of the nation’s security, the first line of defence against crime, and protectors of democracy and citizens’ safety.

“Your role is indispensable, and your contributions are immeasurable. Why have we established National Police Day? The answer is simple. This day honours your invaluable service and recognises those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” President Tinubu remarked.

“To their families, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy. Let it be clear: 7th April is not just a date on the calendar. It symbolises our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Force—a day firmly entrenched in our national consciousness,” he added.

The President praised Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and his team for their outstanding work in driving reforms aligned with the administration’s objectives, noting that the dedication of the force’s leadership is paving the way for a police force that all Nigerians can take pride in.

Earlier, IGP Egbetokun stated that National Police Day is not only a celebration of the establishment of the Nigeria Police Force, but also an opportunity to remember fallen heroes and acknowledge the bravery of the police in operations across the country and beyond.

He emphasised the renewed call for excellence, professionalism, and respect for human rights, virtues that the reformed police force embodies. He outlined the ongoing reforms aimed at building a force that commands trust, upholds justice, and contributes to national development by enhancing security.

The event also featured the inspection of the guard by the Vice President, a procession by tactical units, and a silent drill display by Nigeria Police officers.

Notable figures in attendance included the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji AbdulRazaq Abdulrahman; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume; National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Hon. Makki Yallemen, along with members of the National Assembly; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other Service Chiefs.

Also present were the Deputy Governors of Delta, Ondo, and Enugu States, heads of security and paramilitary organisations, representatives of the Minister of Police Affairs, the Police Service Commission, former Inspectors General of Police, and retired senior police officers, among others.
