Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave from Thursday, August 6, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), the leave is intended to provide the Vice President with time for study, reflection, and intellectual renewal aimed at strengthening his capacity for national service.
The statement explained that the break would also enable Shettima to assess the administration’s ongoing programs, broaden his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for future responsibilities as the Federal Government intensifies the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“During this period, the Vice President will devote time to study, reflection, and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation,” the statement read.
Since taking office, Shettima has played a central role in the implementation and coordination of several government initiatives covering economic development, food security, humanitarian response, digital transformation, employment generation, and regional cooperation.
He has also chaired meetings of the National Economic Council, where the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other senior government officials deliberate on policies affecting the country’s economy and the welfare of citizens.
The Vice President has equally represented President Tinubu at several international and regional engagements, promoting Nigeria’s interests in areas such as economic integration, investment, peace and security, climate action, and sustainable development.
The statement noted that throughout his time in office, Shettima has remained committed to supporting the President’s agenda while carrying out his constitutional responsibilities with dedication and loyalty.
It added that the temporary break would provide an opportunity for renewed focus before the next phase of the administration’s programs.
“The Vice President will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation,” the statement added.
Shettima is expected to resume official duties after his leave as the Federal Government continues efforts to advance key reforms and deliver on the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
