…Emergency teams battle to save trapped workers in Lekki construction disaster

A tragic incident unfolded in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon when a two-storey building still under construction collapsed at Ikota, in the Lekki area of the state, leaving at least two dead and six others with varying degrees of injury.

Among the dead was a 15-year-old boy, while the six survivors were swiftly rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The collapse occurred around 4 p.m., trapping several workers under the rubble.

Upon receiving a distress call, a combined team of rescue operatives from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were immediately deployed to the site.

NSCDC Lagos State Commandant, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro on Wednesday confirmed that the search and rescue operation was promptly activated, with efforts led by Chief Superintendent of Corps, David Oyende, of the Eti-Osa Division.

“While the search, rescue, and recovery operation is still ongoing, we have successfully rescued four individuals alive, while two bodies have been recovered from the wreckage,” Keshinro stated.

The rescue mission, which continued well into Wednesday afternoon, focused on the painstaking task of clearing the debris and securing the site.

While the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown at the time of publication, authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
