Turkey has provided 36 tonnes of food assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Adamawa State as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to support victims of insurgency in northeast Nigeria.
The aid, delivered through Turkey’s disaster management agency, AFAD, in collaboration with the United Nations, was distributed at the Malkohi IDP camp near Yola, the state capital. Residents of the camp, many of whom were displaced by Boko Haram attacks, continue to face harsh living conditions and depend largely on humanitarian support for survival.
The distribution exercise was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy; Adamawa State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Bello Hamman Diram; and emergency response official Selen Laori, alongside local authorities.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Poroy stated that the intervention is part of Turkey’s commitment to easing the suffering of vulnerable populations, noting that the country remains actively engaged in providing humanitarian support to Nigeria. He added that Turkey’s assistance aligns with broader efforts to address the humanitarian and security challenges facing affected communities.
Officials described the food items as critical in meeting the daily needs of displaced persons, particularly in camps where access to basic necessities remains limited. Representatives of emergency management authorities in Adamawa commended the Turkish government for the support, stressing that such interventions are vital in sustaining displaced populations.
The development underscores continued international efforts to respond to the humanitarian crisis in northeast Nigeria, where years of insurgency have forced large numbers of people from their homes and strained local resources.
