Troops of the Nigerian Army under the operational control of Headquarters 13 Brigade have arrested a suspected gun runner and ammunition racketeer during an intelligence-led operation in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The arrest was carried out by troops of the 245 Battalion on Sunday, January 26, 2026, following credible intelligence received by soldiers deployed in the area. The suspect was identified as Mr. Ojo Friday, an indigene of Ochon in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, who is said to be residing in Abomege, Ebonyi State.
According to the army, a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of 245 pump-action cartridges allegedly meant for illegal distribution.
The suspect and the recovered ammunition have been taken into military custody, while preliminary investigations are ongoing. The army said the operation was part of sustained efforts to prevent the circulation of small arms and light weapons and to maintain peace and security within the brigade’s area of responsibility.
Commenting on the arrest, the Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, said the operation underscored the army’s proactive and intelligence-driven approach to internal security.
“This operation demonstrates our commitment to disrupting illicit arms supply chains that threaten peace and stability,” Alimikhena said. “The Nigerian Army, under 13 Brigade, will continue to work closely with sister security agencies and host communities to prevent the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.”
He added that the brigade remained committed to providing a secure environment for socio-economic activities across its area of responsibility.
The brigade commander also commended the troops for their professionalism, vigilance and swift response, noting that the success reflected the high operational readiness of the formation. He urged members of the public to continue supporting the army with timely and credible information to enhance collective security.
