A routine enforcement exercise by the Ogun State Government turned fatal on Tuesday along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway when an unidentified soldier allegedly shot and killed a casual worker.
The victim, identified as Oluwaseyi Adeoye, was part of a labor team hired to assist the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
The incident occurred at the premises of Ganic Company near Orile-Imo in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area.
According to reports, the state officials had arrived at the facility to demolish structures cited for violating building specifications specifically, a perimeter fence that exceeded the approved height.
However, the team encountered stiff resistance from armed military personnel stationed at the company.
Eyewitnesses described a rapidly escalating confrontation between the town planning officials and the soldiers.
Despite the military’s objections, the enforcement team insisted on carrying out the demolition as mandated by the state government.
Tensions reached a breaking point during the heated argument, leading to the fatal discharge of a firearm.
The death of Adeoye has sparked outrage among his colleagues, many of whom fled the scene in the ensuing chaos.
As of the time of this report, military authorities and the Ogun State Police Command have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the identity of the soldier involved or the legal status of the demolition exercise.
