Top 5 countries Nigerian students are relocating to study in 2025

17 Sept 2025

In 2025, the global demand for quality education has kept thousands of Nigerian students on the move, seeking opportunities abroad. Rising tuition costs in local universities, unstable academic calendars, and the lure of international exposure continue to drive this trend.

Latest reports show that Canada, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia stand out as the most attractive destinations.

Canada

Canada has experienced an unprecedented 30 per cent surge in study permit applications from Nigerian students, with about 13,745 new permits issued—the highest in 22 years.

The country’s popularity is tied to its immigrant-friendly policies, post-study opportunities through the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and clear pathways to permanent residency.

Provincial nominee programmes also make relocation smoother, while Nigerian communities across major cities provide new arrivals with strong cultural and social support systems.

United States

The United States remains a powerful magnet, especially for Nigerian students pursuing STEM courses. Flexible academic structures, cutting-edge research facilities, and work options such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) give students a competitive edge.

However, stricter visa measures, including the newly introduced three-month single-entry rule, present fresh hurdles. Despite this, the U.S. continues to host thousands of Nigerian students annually due to its global prestige and academic excellence.

Germany

Germany has emerged as a favourite for Nigerians seeking affordable, high-quality education. Public universities charge little or no tuition fees, apart from modest semester contributions of €200–€500.

The country’s reputation for engineering, IT, and healthcare programmes has made it a key hub for Nigerian students. Germany also boasts a strong job market for international graduates, allowing students to transition from study to work seamlessly.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, though experiencing a slight decline in Nigerian student enrolments in recent years, still accounts for a significant share about 25 per cent of all outbound Nigerian students, according to UNESCO. Prestigious institutions, cultural familiarity, and the Graduate Route Visa, which grants up to two years of post-study work, sustain the UK’s popularity.

The country’s long-standing academic ties with Nigeria continue to give it an edge over other destinations.

Malaysia

Malaysia has quietly climbed into the top five destinations for Nigerian students. With over 13,000 Nigerians currently enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, its appeal lies in affordability, English-language courses, and a welcoming academic environment.

The rise of private universities and partnerships with Western institutions have further strengthened its position as a cost-effective alternative to traditional Western destinations.
