Tobi Amusan set to return for Prefontaine classic

The world of track and field is buzzing with the news that Nigerian hurdle sensation Tobi Amusan is officially heading back to Eugene.

Organizers of the Diamond League have confirmed that the world record holder is a headline addition to the women’s 100m hurdles for the Prefontaine Classic, scheduled to light up Hayward Field on July 4.

This appearance is a massive deal for Amusan, marking her return to competitive action after more than six months away.

Her last major outing was at the World Athletics Championships in September 2025, and fans have been eagerly waiting to see where the 28-year-old would open her 2026 account.

Eugene has always been a “lucky” charm for Amusan, it is the same hallowed ground where she stunned the world in 2022 by shattering the world record with a blistering 12.12-second run and where she clinched the Diamond League trophy in 2023.

However, the path to the podium will be anything but easy. The field at the Prefontaine Classic is shaping up to be a clash of the titans.

Amusan will be squaring off against the reigning Olympic champion, Masai Russell, who is coming off a scorching 2025 season where she set a series record of 12.19 seconds in Silesia.

Also in the mix are two-time world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica and the rising American star Grace Stark, who grabbed bronze at the Tokyo World Championships last year.

The Prefontaine Classic serves as the ninth stop on the 2026 Diamond League circuit, which kicks off in Doha this May. For Amusan, who dominated the series with three consecutive titles between 2021 and 2023, this race is a chance to prove she is still the queen of the hurdles.

With the series final set for Brussels in September, all eyes will be on Hayward Field this July to see if the Nigerian star can recapture the magic that made her a household name.
