The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms will play a major role in determining the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

Alausa, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikharo Attah, said the administration had taken difficult but necessary steps to strengthen the economy and create the foundation for long-term growth.

According to him, the impact of the reforms was being reflected in Nigeria’s economic indicators and acknowledged by both local and international institutions.

“Nigeria’s economic progress is no longer a matter of political rhetoric but one supported by credible data and independent assessments,” the minister said.

Alausa pointed to reports from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Bloomberg and the National Bureau of Statistics as evidence that the government’s economic policies were beginning to produce measurable results and improve confidence in the Nigerian economy.

He said inflation was gradually easing, while economic activities and other key macroeconomic indicators were showing signs of improvement.

“The President is focused on building a stronger Nigeria for generations to come. These reforms are not designed for short-term gains but to create lasting prosperity. There is no value in making difficult decisions if they cannot stand the test of time,” he said.

The minister said the Federal Government would continue to focus on fiscal discipline, structural reforms and policies that promote long-term economic stability.

He added that the reforms were aimed at putting Nigeria on a stronger path towards inclusive growth, higher productivity and sustainable national development.

Alausa further maintained that the performance of the Tinubu administration would become clearer to Nigerians as the benefits of the reforms continue to emerge, adding that its record would speak for itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to policies designed to improve the economy, enhance citizens’ welfare and advance the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The gains of the current reforms will continue to deliver lasting prosperity for all Nigerians,” he said.

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has introduced several major economic measures, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, the unification of foreign exchange windows, tax reforms and other policies aimed at increasing government revenue and attracting investment.

Although international financial institutions, including the IMF and World Bank, have welcomed some of the reforms as efforts to address long-standing economic challenges, the policies have also attracted criticism over their impact on Nigerians.

Inflation, high food prices and the rising cost of living have continued to put pressure on households and businesses, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over the economic hardship.

The Federal Government, however, has maintained that the short-term difficulties are necessary to restore economic stability, strengthen public finances and create the conditions for sustainable growth.

The administration has also rolled out various social intervention programmes and economic support initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of the reforms on vulnerable Nigerians and businesses.
