President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling Nigeria’s evolving security challenges through the deployment of modern technology, improved military capacity, and enhanced operational readiness.
The President gave the assurance on Monday at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The event, themed “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” marked the Army’s 163rd anniversary.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said the Federal Government is investing heavily in emerging technologies, research, and innovation to strengthen the Armed Forces’ ability to respond to contemporary threats.
“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” the President stated.
According to the President, efforts to revitalize the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) remain central to the government’s plan to achieve self-reliance in military production and reduce dependence on imported hardware.
He expressed optimism that international partnerships, such as the African Land Forces Forum, will boost local manufacturing capabilities, create employment opportunities, and enhance national defence.
He noted that these collaborative platforms will also strengthen intelligence sharing, improve border security, support counter-terrorism operations, and promote shared advancements in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
Tinubu praised the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their continued sacrifices in protecting the country, urging them to remain committed to defending the nation while fully respecting the rights and dignity of citizens.
The President also paid tribute to fallen soldiers, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of national peace, and assured their families that they will always be supported by the government.
Earlier in the event, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed that more than 80 per cent of Nigerian troops are currently engaged in various internal security operations across the country.
He revealed that the Army has detected the presence of foreign jihadists near Nigeria’s borders but assured citizens that the military remains vigilant and fully prepared to confront the threat.
“The Nigerian Army is not oblivious to the dire security situation in neighbouring countries across the Sahel region. We have already noticed the footprints of foreign jihadists across our borders,” Shaibu said, maintaining that the Army will continue to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara congratulated the Nigerian Army on its anniversary and described the decision to host the celebration in Port Harcourt as clear evidence that the state remains peaceful and secure.
He called for improved welfare for military personnel and pledged the continuous support of the state government for the Armed Forces
