As Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, marked his 60th birthday on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, high-profile tributes flooded in from political, legislative, and entertainment circles, underscoring his influence across governance and public service.

Yet amid the accolades, some voices used the occasion to remind the governor of the weight of legacy and the urgency of action.

From President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Lagos State House of Assembly, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Niger State Governor Umar Bago, and music executive Olamide, the common thread in their messages was acknowledgment of Sanwo-Olu’s contributions to Lagos’ evolution into a modern African city-state.

However, some, like political strategist Otunba Segun Showunmi, delivered both birthday greetings and a pointed wake-up call.

President Tinubu, who played an important role in Sanwo-Olu’s political rise, hailed the governor’s commitment to continuity and development.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the completion of the Lagos Blue and Red Rail Lines, as well as the upcoming Purple Line project designed to link the vital Lekki corridor.

“You have stayed true to the vision of transforming Lagos. I urge you to sustain this trajectory by prioritising impactful projects such as the long-awaited Fourth Mainland Bridge and the Freedom Way-VGC corridor,” the president stated.

Tinubu recalled that Sanwo-Olu began his career under his mentorship and has since served in various capacities, including as a commissioner and Managing Director of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation.

The Lagos State House of Assembly, through its Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, described Governor Sanwo-Olu as a leader whose life has been marked by “purpose, integrity and transformational governance.”

“Your dedication, leadership, and commitment to the progress of Lagos have left an indelible mark. You exemplify the true essence of a visionary leader,” Ogundipe stated on behalf of Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa and the House.

The Assembly lauded key initiatives of Sanwo-Olu’s administration, noting that his strategic approach to policy and inclusive development has continued to instil public confidence.

In a separate tribute, Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, described Sanwo-Olu as “a respected politician, skilled professional, experienced administrator, and brother governor.”

A statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Festus Ahon, said: “Your pragmatic and forward-thinking leadership style has propelled progress throughout Lagos. We celebrate you for your selfless service and commend your legacy of good governance.”

Also, Niger State Governor Umar Bago, in his own message, praised Sanwo-Olu as “an inspirational and courageous leader” who has formed strategic inter-state partnerships, particularly under the Produce-for-Lagos agricultural programme.

Popular music star, Olamide, released a video message thanking Sanwo-Olu for his support of the entertainment industry.

“Thank you for your contributions to our sector. I wish you divine grace, sound health, and many more impactful years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Otunba Segun Showunmi used the milestone to deliver a blunt warning, urging Sanwo-Olu to act decisively against lawlessness and environmental decay across the state. In a statement titled “Not Bad for 60,” Showunmi acknowledged the governor’s achievements but warned that Lagos was veering dangerously close to becoming a “mega slum.”

“What must be pulled down should be pulled down. Lagos must not become a mega slum. This is not a no man’s land—it is a land that must be governed,” he charged.

He called on Sanwo-Olu to prioritise the work of Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, and intensify urban enforcement policies.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has pledged to renew his commitment to building a Lagos that works for everyone, as he marked his 60th birthday on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Speaking during a thanksgiving event themed “Rhythms of Worship with Adura,” the governor said the milestone was not just a personal achievement, but a spiritual moment for reflection, gratitude, and renewed dedication to public service.

He described Lagos as more than a city, calling it “an idea and a promise” that he remains committed to fulfilling through responsible and people-focused leadership.

Sanwo-Olu noted that even at 60, he remains energised by the responsibility of leading Africa’s largest city-state, adding that prayer continues to play a central role in his personal and political journey.

The governor said the event’s theme, “Adura,” was inspired by his Yoruba name, Aduragbemi, which means “prayer has lifted me.”

He stated that the gathering was not meant to be a spectacle, but a sacred space to give thanks to God for life, health, peace, and purpose.

Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to his family, team, and supporters, saying their love and loyalty have helped shape his leadership.

He thanked his wife, children, friends, and political associates for their support, describing the celebration as one that belongs to all who have walked the journey with him.

The thanksgiving event was attended by top dignitaries, including Governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti.

Also present were Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat and former Lagos Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The event featured performances from leading gospel artists such as Moses Bliss, Mercy Chinwo, Arugbo Ojo, and Emma Oh My God, alongside the MFM Guitar Choir and Dream Catchers Academy.

The music and worship created a celebratory yet solemn atmosphere, as family members, political allies, and well-wishers joined the governor in giving thanks.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his promise to continue serving the people of Lagos with integrity, vision, and empathy.
