President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday departed Lagos for Europe to continue his end-of-year break before proceeding on an official trip to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The President, who had been in Lagos for the Christmas celebrations and the Eyo Festival, left the country to rest and prepare for his upcoming international engagement in the Middle East.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the presidency, the European leg of the trip serves as a continuation of the President’s holiday before he connects to the UAE for a high-level global summit.
Onanuga disclosed that President Tinubu accepted an invitation from His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, to participate in the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2026) Summit. The event is scheduled to take place in the emirate early in January.
The statement read in part: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Lagos today Sunday, December 28, for Europe, continuing his end-of-year break and ahead of his official trip to Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.”
“The weeklong summit is an annual event that mobilises leaders from government, business, and society to chart the next era of sustainable development. With the theme ‘The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go’, ADSW will connect ambition with action across innovation, finance, and people, showcasing how the world can move forward with confidence.”
The Presidency noted that the summit is designed to bring together global leaders to advance sustainable development goals and explore practical solutions in innovation, finance, and governance.
It emphasized that President Tinubu’s participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global sustainability initiatives and positions the country strategically within international discussions on climate, energy, and development.
The President is expected to return to the country upon the conclusion of the summit.
