President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure that will see personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces receive between 30 and 80 per cent increases in their pay, with the adjustment expected to take effect from September 1, 2026.
The new package is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel across different ranks and is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of officers and men serving in the country’s armed forces.
The development was contained in a press release posted on X on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Under the approved arrangement, senior officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Officers from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer are to receive a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from the rank of private to staff sergeant will benefit from an 80 per cent adjustment.
With the implementation of the new salary structure, the annual wage bill for personnel of the armed forces is expected to rise from N660 billion to N924 billion.
The salary increase comes as the military continues to play a central role in tackling security challenges across different parts of the country. Armed forces personnel have remained involved in operations against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, among other threats to national security.
The President has repeatedly acknowledged the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families, particularly those serving in high-risk areas and confronting security threats.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” Tinubu said.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel and providing the armed forces with modern equipment and technological support to enhance their operational effectiveness.
The development is expected to provide additional financial relief for military personnel amid rising living costs, while also serving as an incentive for officers and soldiers who continue to serve in challenging operational environments.
The Federal Government said the welfare of security personnel remains a key part of its broader security strategy, stressing that a well-supported military is essential to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.
The new salary adjustment is therefore expected to strengthen the government’s efforts to boost troop morale while recognising the contribution of members of the armed forces to national security and stability.
