Tin Can Port hosts UCH Ibadan students

The Port Manager of Tin Can Island Port, Sani Isa Abubakar, has urged students of University College Hospital Ibadan to remain focused and pursue excellence in their careers, as the Nigerian Ports Authority hosted them on an educational visit to the port.

Addressing the Occupational Health Nursing students during the visit, Abubakar assured them of their safety within the port environment and provided insights into the complex operations of Tin Can Island Port.

He emphasised the importance of discipline, professionalism, and adherence to safety standards in sustaining efficient maritime operations.

The visit formed part of efforts to bridge academic learning with practical exposure in occupational health and safety within critical national infrastructure.

As part of the programme, the students were taken on a guided tour of Josepdam Terminal, where they observed cargo handling processes and other port activities. They also visited the Tin Can Island Port Control Tower, gaining firsthand knowledge of vessel coordination and operational monitoring.

In addition, a detailed presentation on occupational health practices in the port environment was delivered at the Port Manager’s Conference Room. The session covered workplace safety protocols, risk assessment, and health management systems within the maritime sector.

The training was further enriched with practical demonstrations of key occupational hygiene measurement equipment used in monitoring environmental and safety conditions in port operations.

The students actively participated in the sessions, asking questions and engaging with port officials, reflecting strong interest in the field.

Many of them described the visit as enlightening, noting that it provided valuable insight into real-world applications of occupational health beyond the hospital setting.

Tin Can Island Port remains a key hub for trade facilitation in Nigeria, while also serving as a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity development within the maritime industry.
