Apple has officially announced that Apple CEO, Tim Cook will be stepping down from his position after leading the tech giant for nearly 15 years.
The company named John Ternus as the company’s next Chief Executive Officer.
The transition, which received unanimous approval from Apple’s board of directors, marks the culmination of a multi-year succession planning strategy.
Under the new leadership structure, Cook will remain with the company as Executive Chairman.
In this capacity, he will focus on high-level advisory roles, specifically representing Apple in discussions with global policymakers and assisting with select strategic operations. This move mirrors the 2011 transition when Steve Jobs moved into the chairman role, providing a bridge of continuity for the $4 trillion company.
John Ternus, a veteran of Apple since 2001, rises to the top post after serving as the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
During his tenure, Ternus was a pivotal figure in the development of the iPad and AirPods, and most recently spearheaded the launch of the MacBook Neo, iPhone 17, and the new iPhone Air.
Colleagues describe Ternus as a man of the people, noting his grounded leadership style and long history within the product design and engineering teams.
While Ternus brings deep technical expertise and a proven track record of product innovation, analysts note that the CEO role will require him to navigate complex political and regulatory landscapes—areas where Cook has historically been the primary face of the company.
The transition comes at a time of unprecedented financial strength for Apple. Since Cook took the helm in 2011, the company’s market capitalization has grown fourteenfold, establishing it as the third most valuable entity globally, trailing only Alphabet and Nvidia.
Cook’s legacy is defined by the massive expansion of Apple’s services division and the successful shift to in-house Apple Silicon.
In a statement regarding the shift, Cook expressed humility and a commitment to ensuring the company continues to operate under the vision that has defined it for five decades.
Ternus will join the board of directors concurrently with his appointment as CEO this September, signaling a new era for the world’s most influential consumer electronics brand.
