Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu stands as a powerful force in Nigeria’s public health space, consistently advocating for and supporting cancer patients across the nation.

A highly trained paediatrician, influential policy advocate, and leading global voice for cancer control, she has carved out a unique and impactful career at the intersection of medicine, governance, and humanity. Dr. Zainab effectively leverages her considerable influence to save lives and build robust systems designed to outlast political positions.

Dr. Zainab is the Founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, recognized as one of Nigeria’s most consistent and impactful cancer advocacy organizations. Long before health advocacy became a widespread trend, she was on the frontlines, committed to cancer awareness, early detection, and patient support, directly confronting the painful reality of late diagnosis, stigma, and preventable cancer deaths.

Her strong foundation in medicine includes a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Driven by a passion for child health, she further specialized in the United Kingdom, obtaining a Master’s degree in Tropical Paediatrics and Child Health Medicine from the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Master of Science in Tropical Paediatrics from the University of Liverpool.

Beyond her clinical and advocacy work, Dr. Zainab is a respected voice shaping health policy in Nigeria and globally. She currently serves as the Chairperson of First Ladies Against Cancer and is a Senior Adviser to the Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria.

She also sits on the Advisory Council of the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer, contributing to strategies that advance cancer prevention and equitable healthcare across Africa.

As the former First Lady of Kebbi State, she redefined the office, transforming it into a dynamic platform for social impact.

She actively championed women’s health, maternal and child care, girl-child education, and essential healthcare access for rural communities. Crucially, she led campaigns across Northern Nigeria that courageously challenged cultural barriers, advocating for medical education and advocacy to be delivered in local languages to meet people where they are.

Her influence extends far beyond the national level. Dr. Zainab is an influential global health leader, serving on boards and initiatives that shape policy across the continent. She currently holds the distinguished position of President-Elect of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and has been actively involved in WHO and UN health conversations, consistently amplifying Africa’s voice and pushing for equitable access to cancer care on the global stage.

Dr. Zainab’s standout feature is her courage to directly confront complex challenges. Recognizing that cancer care in Africa often suffers from a lack of infrastructure, insufficient funding, and sparse data, she chose to build solutions rather than merely complain.

Through the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, she has facilitated thousands of free cancer screenings, sponsored diagnostic tests, supported treatment interventions, and fostered essential research partnerships. Through powerful collaborations and awareness campaigns like Walk Away Cancer, combined with high-level policy dialogues, Dr. Zainab is successfully shifting the narrative from silent, late-stage diagnosis to proactive early detection and survival.

Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu is powerful proof that leadership is ultimately about service, extending far beyond a title. She is a compassionate paediatrician who never stopped being a doctor, even after stepping into governance. She is a dedicated reformer who believes that health is a fundamental right, rising daily to confront an enemy that has taken too many lives, placing her firmly at the forefront of Nigeria’s ongoing cancer battle.
