In a dramatic turn of events, no fewer than 11 suspected terrorists met their end after an improvised explosive device (IED) they were reportedly transporting detonated prematurely.
The incident occurred near Babbar Doka village, located within the Dansadau Emirate of Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara State.
This self-inflicted fatality comes amid a documented resurgence of banditry in the region and a worrying trend of insurgents deploying high-yield explosives against civilian and security targets.
According to local reports, the suspects were navigating through secluded bush paths on motorcycles to avoid military checkpoints when the device went off.
Residents of Babbar Doka described hearing a deafening explosion that echoed across the emirate, followed by a plume of smoke rising from the forest trails.
“They were moving through the thicket under the cover of the bush when the bomb detonated,” one witness noted, adding that the impact was instantaneous, leaving no survivors among the group.
The Maru Local Government Area has been a flashpoint for such activity, with the Dansadau Emirate frequently targeted due to its vast, difficult-to-patrol forested terrain.
While the specific target of this aborted mission remains unconfirmed, the trajectory of the suspects suggested they were moving toward more populated areas, raising fears that a significant tragedy was narrowly averted by the technical failure of the device.
Following the blast, security forces moved to cordoned off the area to conduct a forensic sweep and ensure no unexploded secondary devices remained.
The Zamfara State Police Command and military units in the Operation Hadarin Daji theater have frequently warned residents to report suspicious movements in the bush, particularly groups traveling on motorcycles in unconventional formations.
