Tension has gripped the Southern Kaduna Islamic community following reports that a student they sponsored to study in the United Kingdom has renounced Islam and embraced Christianity.

The student, identified as Ibrahim Omoru, who now goes by the name Emmanuel, was reportedly sponsored through a community scholarship scheme which covered his tuition and living expenses abroad. His father was said to have signed as guarantor for the agreement.

Leaders of the Southern Kaduna Islamic community expressed disappointment over the development, describing it as a “betrayal of trust and faith.” The community chairman, in a statement, said the matter had caused “deep pain and concern” among members and called for a full review of the circumstances surrounding the sponsorship.

The news has since sparked reactions across Kaduna and beyond, with many Nigerians debating whether Omoru’s action should be seen as an exercise of personal freedom or a breach of communal responsibility.
