Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling 2-1 victory over rivals South Africa in Casablanca, Morocco.
The nine-time champions opened the scoring through a penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade in the first half, while South Africa responded with a spot-kick from Linda Motlhalo in the second. With the match finely poised, defender Michelle Alozie sealed the win with a stunning late strike from long range.
The victory marks Nigeria’s first win over Banyana Banyana in the tournament since 2016, having lost to them in the group stages of both the 2018 and 2022 editions.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hailed the team’s performance, describing their semi-final triumph as “superlative” and reflective of “the indomitable Nigerian spirit.” In a message shared via his official X handle, Tinubu congratulated the players for their resilience and urged them to bring the trophy home.
“You have made the nation proud. Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Go for our 10th title,” he said.
With this win, the Super Falcons remain on course to reclaim the WAFCON crown, aiming to extend their dominance as the most successful team in African women’s football history.
