Students docked for allegedly belonging to unlawful society

Three students of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa in Oyo State, on Thursday, appeared before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan charged  with belonging to an unlawful society.

The three students are, Taiwo Oyekanmi, 31, Rafiu Owolabi, 21 and Boluwatife Samuel, 26, and are facing charges of conspiracy, unlawful membership of a secret society and possession of gun.

The defendants,  however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Olagoke Adegbenro told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 3, at 2.00 p.m, at the aforementioned institution.

Adegbenro alleged that the defendants unlawfully belonged to Ayee confraternity and were also caught with a gun and three cartridges.

He said the defendants could not satisfactorily give account of how the gun and cartridges came into their possession.

The prosecutor said  the offences committed contravened Sections 516, 62, 64(a) and 430 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Sanusi-Zubair held that the two sureties must be blood relations to the defendants among other requirements.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 16, for mention.
