The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to nightclubs and other hospitality venues across the state, urging them to strictly adhere to occupancy limits or face severe consequences, including closure and legal action.
This warning follows growing concerns over overcrowding in several clubs and lounges, which present significant safety risks to patrons and staff.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Lanre Mojola, Director-General/CEO of the Lagos State Safety Commission, emphasised that the commission fully supports the vibrant nightlife and its economic benefits. However, Mojola stressed the importance of strict compliance with authorised occupancy limits to avoid potential hazards, such as fire accidents, which could be aggravated by overcrowding and smoking in public spaces.
“Nightclubs must not allow overcrowding, as this poses serious safety risks, including fire hazards, blocked emergency exits, and an increased likelihood of accidents,” Mojola stated.
He further pointed out that these risks not only endanger the lives of clubgoers but also the staff and the general public.
The commission has already begun rigorous inspections of nightclubs to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Mojola reiterated that any establishment found violating these rules would face immediate closure and further legal action as deemed necessary.
“We urge all nightclub owners and operators to comply with the safety measures and occupancy limits set by the Lagos State Safety Commission,” Mojola added. “These regulations are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, and we are committed to taking action against any violations.”
He also encouraged Lagosians to report any nightclub operating in violation of these regulations by contacting the commission at 07000SAFETY.
The Lagos State Government has consistently prioritised the safety of all residents and visitors, especially during the festive season. With increased nightlife activity anticipated during the holidays, the government has made it clear that safety must come first.
“We appreciate the cooperation of all stakeholders in ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all. Let’s work together to keep Lagos safe and thriving,” Mojola concluded.
