The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has denounced reports claiming that its wage renegotiation with the Federal Government has been concluded.
In a communiqué issued after a Special National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on April 18, 2026, the union characterized a circulated letter suggesting a presidential approval of a 30 percent allowance hike as a rude shock and a violation of collective bargaining principles.
SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, clarified that discussions are still ongoing, with seven meetings held since October 2024, and emphasized that no final agreement has been signed.
The association has reaffirmed its commitment to an ultimatum issued alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) under the Joint Action Committee (JAC).
The unions have warned the Federal Government that failure to conclude negotiations by April 30, 2026, will result in an indefinite, comprehensive, and total industrial action across all universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Ibrahim stated that if the exercise is not finished by the end of the month, the union will mobilize its members to withdraw their services immediately.
Highlighting the critical role of non-teaching staff, the union leadership noted that its members are responsible for vital administrative functions, including admissions, processing results, student mobilization for the NYSC, healthcare services, and security.
SSANU further insisted on a fair outcome that respects the negotiated understanding reached during the process, rejecting any terms that treat its members as second-class workers.
The NEC urged its members to remain vigilant and united while expressing hope that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would heed the voices of the workers to avoid a total shutdown of the tertiary education system.
