Troops of sector 3 under operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by terrorists on a military location in Monguno, Borno State, but lost their Commanding Officer and six other personnel in the process.
The attack, which occurred late on April 12 at the Charlie 13 location in Monguno, was described as an isolated infiltration by terrorists.
According to the military, troops engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, eventually forcing them to retreat while maintaining control of the base.
However, tragedy struck shortly after the encounter when the Commanding Officer, who was moving to assess the situation at the frontline, ran into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion reportedly destroyed his vehicle, killing him and six other soldiers.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the fallen officer was praised for his courage and leadership, noting that his decision to personally move towards his troops, even after the attack had been contained, demonstrated exceptional bravery and commitment.
The military described his actions as reflective of the highest traditions of service, highlighting his dedication to the welfare of his men and operational effectiveness on the battlefield.
Operation Hadin Kai expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the deceased personnel as gallant officers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.
The Joint Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations against insurgents in the North-East, assuring Nigerians that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes would not be in vain.
Monguno, located in Borno State, has remained a strategic frontline in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations against terrorist groups operating in the region.
