The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have confirmed the death of six passengers in a tragic boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel.

The incident involving a Savvy Marine passenger vessel occurred at approximately 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

The boat was reportedly en route from Ilashe Beach House when the mishap occurred.

According to a joint statement by the waterways authorities, Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from LASWA and NIWA were immediately deployed upon receiving a distress alert. They worked in collaboration with the Marine Police and other emergency responders to manage the situation.

Four passengers were rescued alive and are currently receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital. However, recovery teams retrieved six bodies from the scene. Search operations remain active to ensure all persons aboard are accounted for.

Preliminary findings suggest the accident may have resulted from a collision with a submerged object. However, authorities noted that the vessel was operating well past the approved timeframe for water travel, violating the state’s no night travel regulations.

“Investigations are ongoing to fully ascertain the exact cause of the incident,” the statement read.

LASWA and NIWA expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims while reaffirming their commitment to safety on Lagos inland waterways.

They reiterated the critical need for strict adherence to navigation rules, specifically the ban on night travel, to prevent future tragedies.

Members of the public have been urged to remain calm and rely on verified updates from official sources.
