“She brought a knife”: Marriage crisis lands woman in court over death threat

20 Jun 2025

It was supposed to be just another evening in Gwagwalada. But what unfolded on June 1 shattered the quiet. A woman, caught in the web of marital frustration and emotional turmoil, showed up at her husband’s door, holding a knife.

That woman, Ifeoma Okafor, now faces criminal charges. She stood before a Senior Magistrate’s Court on Friday, accused of threatening to kill her husband and injuring herself in the process of a domestic meltdown.

The court proceedings brought to light a deeply personal conflict that escalated into something darker — and potentially dangerous.

According to the prosecutor, Abdulahi Tanko, Ifeoma’s husband, Paul Okafor, filed a report at the Gwagwalada police station after what he described as a terrifying encounter in their shared home.

He said on that day, she knocked on his door. And when he opened it, he didn’t just see his wife — he saw a knife in her hand. Tanko told the court that Ifeoma threatened to kill her husband, and then to stab herself, all in the heat of a domestic quarrel.

As if the emotional blow wasn’t enough, Paul claimed she also smashed one of his window panes in anger — the cost of damage still unknown.

Police charged Ifeoma with criminal intimidation and mischief under Sections 396 and 326 of the Penal Code. Charges she denied, standing quietly in the dock as the accusations were read out.

The presiding judge, Senior Magistrate Munir Sani, granted her bail but not without conditions. Bail was set at ₦500,000, and the court demanded two sureties. One of them must be a blood relative who lives within the jurisdiction, and the second must show a statement of account reflecting the bail amount. Identification documents were made compulsory for both.

With the case now adjourned until July 16, the courtroom drama has spilled into public conversation — and once again, raises questions about mental health, domestic breakdowns, and the silent battles many couples fight behind closed doors.

For now, Ifeoma is out on bail. But the tension that led to that knock on the door, and the knife that came with it, still hangs in the air.
