The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria has announced the re-election of its Director-General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, as Vice Chair of the Africa/Middle-East Regional Committee (AMERC).

This second term, confirmed by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), will span from 2026 to 2028.

Established in 1983, IOSCO is the premier global standard-setter for the securities industry. Its members regulate over 95% of the world’s securities markets across more than 100 jurisdictions, making it the most influential international policy forum for market regulators.

This appointment underscores the growing international confidence in Nigeria’s regulatory progress and its strategic importance within the Middle East and Africa. By retaining the Vice Chairmanship, Nigeria also secures its seat on the IOSCO Board, the organization’s highest policy-making body.

This position ensures that Nigerian perspectives and priorities remain central to global discussions on regulatory frameworks, cross-border cooperation, the evolution of international financial market standards, market integrity, and investor protection.

Dr. Agama noted that the re-election enhances Nigeria’s ability to contribute to critical global dialogues.

He highlighted that the role provides a stronger platform for tackling illicit financial flows and strengthening supervisory frameworks through collaboration with other jurisdictions.

“Beyond representation, this development enhances Nigeria’s ability to contribute meaningfully to global regulatory dialogue. It supports ongoing efforts to align Nigeria’s capital market with international best practices, fostering greater investor confidence and facilitating increased participation in global financial markets,” Agama stated.
