Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger collaboration between Lagos and China in areas of green energy, smart city projects, capacity building, and cultural exchange to drive sustainable development.
Speaking through his deputy, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, at the 76th Chinese National Day Reception held at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, the governor stressed that such partnerships would be central to the vision of building a Greater Lagos that is globally competitive, productive, and resilient.
He said: “We have enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Chinese institutions and companies in infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, and trade.
“Chinese investors continue to create jobs, drive industrial growth, and deepen cultural ties. The story of China is a reminder that with vision, discipline, and shared purpose, a nation can rise to greatness despite challenges.”
Sanwo-Olu noted that Chinese partnerships have already boosted Lagos infrastructure development, particularly in transport and industrial projects.
He added that the state was determined to draw inspiration from China’s growth model as it advances its transformation agenda.
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, reinforced the point, stating that Lagos had significantly benefited from Chinese-backed projects.
He said: “The development of critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and rail systems has been bolstered by Chinese investments. We must also continue to promote cultural and educational exchanges that prepare our youth for a cooperative future.”
Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, described the bilateral ties as strategic and people-centred.
He added: “Nigeria and China have built a partnership anchored on mutual respect, shared aspiration, and practical cooperation. This committee remains firmly committed to strengthening the relationship in line with our national priorities.”
Yakubu further tied Nigeria’s support to global calls for equity in international relations, stressing that sovereignty, multilateralism, and people-centred development were aligned with Africa’s vision for a fairer world.
In her address, Consul-General of China in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, highlighted China’s achievements since 1949, noting that the country had become the world’s second-largest economy and a leading trading nation.
She disclosed that China’s GDP reached 130 trillion yuan (US$18.36 trillion) in 2024, with a growth rate of 5 percent.
Yuqing said the Chinese Consulate in Lagos had also advanced public welfare projects, including the Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light initiative, which has restored vision to nearly 400 Nigerians, and the Together Fight against Hunger project, which has supported hundreds of low-income families.
