Sanwo-Olu not asked to resign – Lagos Gov’t dismisses rumours

28 Apr 2026

The Lagos State Government has debunked a report circulating on social media claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was ordered to resign due to health concerns.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the state government characterized the allegations as deliberate falsehoods and fake news.

The clarification follows a report published by Sahara Reporters, which alleged that the Governor had been instructed to step down on medical grounds, purportedly clearing the way for Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat to take over the administration.

Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, dismissed the claims in their entirety, asserting that no such order has been given.

Akosile emphasized that Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in excellent health and of sound mind, and continues to actively perform his constitutional duties as the leader of Nigeria’s economic hub.

In a move to provide further context to the Governor’s current schedule, the statement noted that Sanwo-Olu hosted Deputy Governor Hamzat earlier in the day.

The meeting, described as cordial, was a formal courtesy visit during which Dr. Hamzat notified the Governor of his intention to contest for the governorship in the upcoming election cycle.

The state government criticized the news outlet for what it described as a track record of publishing disinformation.

While the administration noted it would typically ignore such baseless claims, it felt compelled to issue an official rebuttal to prevent public anxiety and reassure the residents of Lagos.

Lagosians have been advised to disregard the report and rely only on official channels for information regarding the state’s leadership.

The statement reaffirms that the current administration remains stable and focused on its governance mandate.
