The Lagos State Government has approved the transformation of the Obalende Bus Stop into a modern transport hub aimed at enhancing traffic flow and urban aesthetics in the area. The project, fully sponsored by MTN Nigeria as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, will integrate the Obalende loop, underbridge, and adjoining lay-by into Lagos’ Mega-City vision.

According to a statement by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, the Y’ELLO Bus Park will feature organised and regulated bus operations, clearly labelled location signages, and solar-powered installations to support energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.

The transport hub will also include provisions for recyclables drop-off stations, tree planting, and landscaped areas, promoting environmental sustainability and improving air quality. Facilities such as food and beverage kiosks, ticketing booths, public toilets, and designated spaces for LAWMA sweepers and security agencies will be provided to improve the health, safety, and well-being of commuters and residents.

The Commissioner explained that Obalende has become one of Lagos’ busiest transport hubs, connecting Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and the Mainland via the Third Mainland Bridge. Rapid urbanisation, population growth, and informal economic activities have led to challenges including illegal trading, poor waste management, unauthorised use of space, and deteriorating aesthetics.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had previously visited the site on February 18, 2024, noting its deviation from Lagos’ megacity vision and the impact on security, public health, and ease of movement. Following the visit, the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources conducted several cleanup and enforcement interventions, most recently in December 2025 and January 2026.

The Obalende transformation project is part of the state’s broader strategy to modernise urban transport, enhance livability, and promote sustainable development while maintaining the city’s appeal as a thriving commercial hub.
