Following recent safety enforcement operations in high-risk areas of Makoko, the Lagos State Government has initiated a humanitarian support program for affected residents.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that the state is providing palliatives, financial stipends, and temporary relocation assistance to families whose homes were removed due to their proximity to critical infrastructure and high-tension power lines.
The Governor explained that while the enforcement of safety regulations is necessary to protect the public, the administration has a responsibility to act with compassion.
The relief package is specifically designed to support the most vulnerable, including children and the elderly, who were impacted by the clearing of unsafe structures.
This initiative is being managed through a coordinated effort between local government authorities and relevant state ministries to ensure transparency and timely delivery.
According to the Governor, the enforcement exercise followed a period of community engagement intended to clarify that the goal was the protection of lives rather than the displacement of entire communities. State ministries have been instructed to document all relief efforts and maintain open lines of communication with the residents.
This intervention reflects a broader policy of balancing the state’s urban development goals with social responsibility and public safety.
