The House of Representatives has adopted a report on the proposed creation of state police and approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses aimed at strengthening governance and national security.
The decision was taken during Thursday’s plenary session, which was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
Lawmakers considered and approved the clauses as part of wider constitutional review efforts focused on improving security structures, governance models, and institutional efficiency across Nigeria.
The move marks a key legislative step in ongoing discussions around restructuring the country’s policing framework. Under the current proposal, state police forces are expected to operate alongside existing federal security agencies if the amendments are successfully enacted.
The approved recommendations form part of a broader review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which has seen several structural proposals debated by the National Assembly.
Further legislative actions, including concurrent alignment with the Senate and passage by state houses of assembly, are expected as the constitutional review process continues.
