The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Dr Abba Abubakar Aliyu, has tasked staff of the agency on continuous innovation and improvement.
Dr. Aliyu made the remarks during the official close-out event of the Renewable Energy Performance and Accountability Support (REPAAS) Digital Transformation Programme in Abuja.
The initiative was funded by the United Kingdom Government through the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) programme and implemented in partnership with Palladium.
Reflecting on the agency’s modernization drive, the Abba highlighted that the intervention has substantially upgraded critical operational workflows.
Key achievements under the programme include the full digitization of procurement and project management frameworks, the rollout of an open-source Customer Relationship Management system tailored for the off-grid energy sector, the integration of developer training portals, and the exploration of Renewable Energy Credits designed to unlock international climate finance.
Aliyu emphasized that while the structured training phase has formally concluded, the true test of the initiative lies in practical application, continuous learning, and indigenous experimentation.
He noted that the REA is evolving into an increasingly data-driven agency, utilizing modern analytics to optimize project planning, monitor power deployment across rural communities, and transparently measure socioeconomic impact.
He further declared that digital transformation in public service is an ongoing journey rather than a one-off milestone, urging agency personnel to build upon newly acquired capabilities to accelerate nationwide electrification.
The ultimate objective of deploying digital technology within the agency, according to Aliyu, is to build a faster, more transparent, and accountable public institution capable of closing Nigeria’s electricity access gap.
In his closing remarks, the REA boss commended the UK Government, UK PACT, Palladium, and project partners for their collaborative support, while charging agency staff to take full ownership of the digital assets and continually enhance them to meet emerging energy sector challenges.
