REA MD highlights ROGEAP launch as milestone for regional energy integration

3 Apr 2026

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Dr. Abba Aliyu has hailed the official commencement of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP) Nigeria pilot as a transformative step in achieving regional energy integration

Speaking at the launch event in Abuja recently, Dr. Aliyu emphasized that the initiative is a direct progression from the Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2026 and serves as a critical mechanism for closing the energy access gap in a structured and sustainable manner.

The REA Boss underscored the significance of the project’s regional framework, noting that its value lies in building the necessary systems for large-scale impact.

This includes the identification and systematic removal of policy barriers, alongside the strengthening of quality standards for standalone solar products across all participating countries. Such measures are designed to ensure that the expansion of off-grid solutions is supported by a robust regulatory environment that protects both investors and consumers.

Speaking further, Aliyu noted that: “The program also focuses on developing human capital, supporting entrepreneurship, and improving access to finance for both solar companies and end users. These are the building blocks for a market that can sustain itself over time.”

“With a total envelope of $338.7 million, and support from the World Bank, co-financed by the Clean Technology Fundand the Directorate General for International Cooperation of the Netherlands, this is a strong example of how partnerships can come together to drive impact across the region.”

“For us at the Rural Electrification Agency, it is another opportunity to accelerate progress, deepen collaboration, and continue the work of expanding reliable energy access across Nigeria and beyond,” he concluded.
