The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has called for greater collaboration among stakeholders to promote the competitiveness and quality of Made-in-Nigeria products. The agency made the call during a one-day media capacity-building workshop held on Tuesday in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, SON Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, underscored the pivotal role of the media in driving national economic goals, particularly the “Nigeria First” policy. He urged journalists to help amplify the benefits of patronising certified locally made products and create public awareness on the importance of compliance with Nigerian Industrial Standards.

“As Nigeria works to diversify its economy and position itself competitively in the African and global markets, standards have become the currency of global relevance,” Okeke said. “They are not just tools for regulation but key instruments for growth, innovation, consumer protection, and trade facilitation.”

The SON boss also highlighted the agency’s ongoing initiatives, including the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) and other product certification schemes. He noted that these programmes are essential to improving Nigeria’s readiness to benefit from opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Also speaking, Engr. Lawal Ismaila, Head of the Electrical Laboratory at SON, advised Nigerians to prioritise the use of locally manufactured electrical components, particularly cables, which he described as world-class in quality.

“Many Nigerian-made cables meet international standards. What we need is collective support for our local manufacturers and rejection of substandard imports that pose safety risks,” Ismaila stated.

He further urged consumers to source products from certified suppliers and advised homeowners and builders to ensure proper electrical grounding and installation of thunder arresters to prevent fire and electrical hazards.

SON reiterated its commitment to raising awareness, improving product quality, and ensuring consumer safety as part of its mandate to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base and promote economic resilience.
